What time is it when a group of random Baker University students grabs a bunch of random items from their rooms and run to a random place on campus?
It’s simply just time.
That’s the sole premise behind Baker alumnus Justin Whittaker’s newest YouTube creation, appropriately titled “It’s Time!”
Whittaker said senior Philip Schiffelbein was the one who originally came up with the idea for the skit.
It all started when the two were roommates at Baker. Schiffelbein said he would go into Whittaker’s room all the time to mess with his things.
One day he picked up Whittaker’s pocket watch and randomly exclaimed, “Justin, it’s time.” So, they started grabbing and bringing random things into their living room. After they gathered everything there, they realized it actually wasn’t time yet.
“And Justin was like, ‘You know, we really need to film this,'” Schiffelbein said.
So, this joke turned into the plot for the “It’s Time!” video.
The video starts off with people waiting around until one person suddenly notices, “It’s time.” They start spreading the word, gathering people and random objects and running excitedly to Fleming Plaza, near Collins Library.
Whittaker filmed this part of the video Saturday. Students were invited to bring random objects and clothing and take part in the filming.
Some of the items students brought ranged from a giant toothbrush and comb, to a stuffed coyote and a cutout of actor Johnny Depp.
“We had something from wildlife to laundry products,” Schiffelbein said. “Which pretty much covers all your bases there.”
As to why “It’s time” and what it’s time for, only the students seem to know.
“Everybody’s moving there for a purpose,” Schiffelbein said. “But the audience never finds out the reason. It’s just something they don’t get to know.”
Once the students actually get there, though, someone stops them and says, “It’s not time yet,” so they leave.
“It’s a big buildup with no punch line,” Whittaker said. “I mean the punch line is they leave.”
Sophomore Kyrie Bair, who took part in the filming, said they had thought about asking University President Pat Long to provide the “It’s not time yet” line, but they didn’t want her to take time out of her busy schedule just for that.
However, Long happened to be walking by while the students were filming, and they convinced her to make a cameo appearance.
“We were so excited that she happened to be walking by,” Bair said.
Schiffelbein was pleased they ended up having the chance to ask her to be in the video.
“It was kind of like the heavens opened up and a golden comedic opportunity dropped into our laps,” Schiffelbein said.
Whittaker said one of the main goals of this video was to promote Chucklebuckets, an improvisation troupe made up of four Baker alumni: Denver Little, Josh Morgan, Whittaker and Bob Linebarger.
After more filming and editing, “It’s Time!” should be ready for viewing on YouTube around Oct. 2.
So, for now, it’s just not time yet.
