Baker University is set to host the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s regional solo and ensemble music competition Saturday.
During the solo and ensemble competition, high school students involved in band, orchestra and choir perform in front of a judge who will give them a rating from one to five, one being the highest.
The musicians perform alone or in a group, and if they get a one rating, they may move on to the state solo and ensemble festival.
Baker is one of many institutions that host the competition, and has hosted the event for more than 16 years. With more than 20 high schools participating, the competition is quite large and a great deal of space is needed.
“We use pretty much the whole campus,” Director of Bands Ray James said.
More than 850 musicians are scheduled to perform in the competition.
