As undergrad students, we oftentimes face struggles whether it is mental, physical, or academic. Luckily, here at Baker, there are several different resources provided as a guide to students or a little boost to better maintain a healthy student.
Some of these resources around campus include a tutoring program, the math center, the writing center, the speech center, the counseling center, etc. These are some of the programs that are often talked about the most.
The tutoring program is provided by Student Academic Success (SAS). This program is free of cost and offered to all Baker students. Students who are looking to be tutored can be mentored by either a student who formally took the class or a professor within the department. The schedule for tutoring services can vary depending on what kind of tutoring a student may need.
Alongside the tutoring program, SAS also provides the writing center, math center, and speech center.
The writing center is located on the first floor of Collins Library in Room 130. It is a tutoring program that focuses strictly on writing techniques. This can be used for assistance on papers, bibliographies, grammar, etc. This resource can be beneficial because it is a chance for someone to look over a paper prior to a student turning it in.
The math center is located in Mulvane, Room 327, and it is available by appointment. This tutoring program is centered on math courses. The main focuses are learning math study skills, helping with math problems a student might be stuck on or even just getting retaught a topic for better help.
The speech center is located in Parmenter, Room 12, and it is strictly by appointment only. This tutoring service is offered to all students, faculty, and staff. This program can be used to practice for personal presentations, group presentations, practicing interview questions for a job or position or even just the principle of practicing competent communication.
Aside from the academic resources that are provided on campus, there are also mental health resources that can be utilized by students.
The counseling center is a free-included service on campus that is accessible to all students, facility and staff. This service is confidential for all students and is kept completely separate from all academic records.
Within the counseling center, there are four different types of counseling. These include individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling or a consultation.
Individual counseling can be provided for a variety of concerns in which students may be facing. This could be homesickness, substance use, anxiety, depression, stress management, eating disorders, etc.
Couples counseling is available as long as one partner is a currently enrolled Baker student. This can be a married couple or a dating couple. Any concerns about a relationship can be discussed here for potential clarity.
Group counseling is a group of students, usually within the same organization, who may be facing struggles of the same concern.
Consultation counseling is seen in various ways. This could be asking for advice on trying to help a friend in need or advice for presenting a heavy topic to a group of people. There are a variety of ways that a consultation could be conducted with a patient seeking help.
Aside from a student’s mental and academic support, there are also resources provided on campus relating to one’s physical health. The fitness center, located in Mabee Hall, is accessible to all Baker students, faculty, and staff. The fitness center is available Mon.- Fri. 6:30 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. and Sat. and Sun. 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. This includes the weight room and all fitness equipment and gives people a free chance to boost their physical health.
There are several resources along campus for students and staff to receive the support they need. By using the resources provided, it can make the transition into college or away from home a lot easier.
