Interterm 2024 wrapped up during the final week of January. Many different classes were available for students to take here on campus, from the comfort of their homes or in a different country.
Dr. Jamin Perry, Associate Professor of Chemistry, was one of the professors who taught an on-campus Interterm this year. Perry taught IE174, also known as Cooking with a Chemist. Twenty-three students were enrolled in the class this year, but this course has also been taught by Perry in many previous years.
“The focus of this class is a little bit of chemistry and a modest amount of cooking,” Perry said.
Students in the class this year had a mix of assigned readings, discussions and quizzes. Following these assignments, students would prepare recipes from scratch. Kierstyn Harmon, a transfer Junior, took Dr. Perry’s class over Interterm.
“This class was super fun and Dr. Perry was very accommodating to my food allergies,” Harmon said. “We made a variety of different dishes from different cultures and I would recommend this class to students in the future who are thinking about taking the class.”
Trevor Belt, Director of Theatre, taught a class online over Interterm; IE136: The Evolution of an Artist: Adam Sandler and the American Dream. This was a class where students would watch past clips and films featuring Adam Sandler and not only analyze the clips and films but analyze the evolution of Sandler himself and his accomplishments concerning the so-called “American Dream.”
Belt had 30 students in his class and heard a lot of positive feedback. Belt said he enjoyed visiting films from Sandler and being able to see these films from a different perspective.
Dr. Leonard Ortiz, Associate Professor of History, took a group of 10 students to spend 11 days in the Yucatán region of Mexico. The class visited three Mayan archaeological sites, Tulum, Ek Balam, and Chichen Itza. They also visited two eco-parks, snorkeled in a lagoon and explored an underwater cavern. Students were required to document their experiences throughout the whole trip. Dr. Ortiz has led the Yucatán travel interterm for the past 15 years.
This winter was his last trip and Ortiz said “I’m bit sad but I will treasure these memories from Yucatán forever.”
Meredith Brown, a sophomore Psychology major, was one of the students who went on the Yucatán trip over interterm. Brown said anyone interested in any moderate history would love this class and all the interesting things you learn. Her favorite thing about this experience on the trip was swimming underwater in the cenotes.
“This experience was something I will remember forever and It was so fun and rewarding,” Brown said.
Interterm classes give Baker students the opportunities to learn and explore topics that may not always be available in the classroom. You can find more details on past and future Interterm classes on the Baker website.
