A new minor will be coming to the Baker University course catalog in fall of 2024. The creative arts department will add the digital photography minor to the 2024 course catalog. Myra Holt, Assistant Professor of Photography will lead the charge in this minor this upcoming school year and is very excited for what is to come within this new minor.
Myra Holt has been an adjunct professor at Baker since 2016, however this is her first year as a full time professor. She has a photography background dating back to her childhood and earned her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in photography from Kansas State in 2013.
The idea for the minor came from the interest expressed by studio art and mass media majors at Baker.
“In looking at the minors that were available, we have studio art but it actually didn’t list the photography classes,” Holt said. “Because it can connect with studio art, mass media, english and social sciences, I thought it’d be a good idea to bring photography in as its own minor.”
To complete the minor students must complete the visual language course which teaches the fundamentals of composition and the principles of design. History of photography to learn familiarity with photographers and how processes have worked and three photography studio classes rounding out to 15 credit hours to complete the minor.
“Campus has been buzzing with excitement about this minor,” Myra said. “Having students be able to really specialize in photography, build new skills and explore new ideas is what excites me the most.”
There is an upcoming gallery exhibit for the advanced photo four class this Thursday at Homestead. This will give students the opportunity to see what the photo program is and can be here at Baker.
“In the fall I’m looking forward to more shows like this one” Holt explains. “Seeing and meeting the students who sign up for these classes and working with the town to find places to put on new shows where students can share their work with the community.”
