Student Activities Council (SAC) hosted the second round of headphone disco on April 25, allowing students to take a step back from the stress of the second semester. The event is free for all students and is usually held once a year. This event is typically held outdoors, but it had to be held in Mabee gym this time around due to poor weather.
This event has been a long-running tradition that sees large turnouts, with nearly 150 students showing up on average. The event consists of students wearing headphones that are set to a certain station. They can then switch between all of the different DJs sets using a button on the headphones to choose what they want to hear. The music at this event can only be heard through the headphones students are given.
To people without headphones, the room or space is silent other than the participants’ singing. Student Affairs works with a company that provides the headphones, and SAC provides students with glow sticks and other light-up keepsakes to enhance their dancing experience.
SAC’s VP of Membership Junior Sebastian Cordova, explains that headphone disco is beneficial for students who are looking to relieve some of their end of semester stress. This two hour event allows students to get together with friends and possibly even make some new ones, allowing them to step away from academics and blow off some steam.
“Headphone disco during the second semester is a great break for everyone,” Cordova said, “I think it’s always a good event to just liberate yourself from school and everything and just have a good time.”
Stress-relieving events like this and others that SAC holds closer to finals week, like finals frenzy, movie nights, and many others, have been a larger focus for SAC as the years have gone on, focusing on maintaining a fun atmosphere and having a positive impact on student’s mental health.
