For any sorority member who wonders how different her life would be if she pledged to a different sorority, an upcoming two-day event will give members the opportunity to live in another sorority house.
“It’s a great way to have people see how life is like in another sorority,” Renea Lindberg, Panhellenic executive vice president, said.
The Sorority Swap event is scheduled to begin Tuesday evening and end Thursday evening. Twelve sorority members, three from each sorority chapter with a house, will participate in the event sponsored by Panhellenic.
The participating women have not been assigned to stay at a particular house and do not get to choose which house they want to stay at. To determine what houses the women will be staying in, names will be chosen out of a hat.
Beyond providing a fun event for sorority members, Miner said she hopes Sorority Swap will have positive results.
“I hope that all sorority women are excited and open to letting others stay in their house,” Panhellenic President Jess Miner said. “I think this will be great for sorority relations.”
Lindberg and Miner said they want the Sorority Swap to bring sorority members at Baker University closer.
“The major goal of the swap is to create a close-knit community,” Lindberg said. “It will help (the women) see what life is like in other sororities and help us understand each other.”
The idea for Sorority Swap came from Brett Bruner, director of greek life and health education. Emporia State University, where Bruner went for his undergraduate education, has a similar event every year.
Bruner hopes that Baker, like ESU, will make Sorority Swap an annual event.
“This event is great for promoting sisterhood and greek life,” Bruner said. “Events like this may help sorority women to grow as an entire community instead of individual chapters.”
Miner said she hopes everyone enjoys themselves so Sorority Swap can be carried out again in the future.
“If it goes well, I hope it will continue,” Miner said.
