Fellowship of Christian Athletes is coming to Baker University.
Baker University Student Senate approved the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FCA, on campus. Co-Presidents, senior Abbie Jones and junior Taryn Dial are excited to spearhead the group starting with their first meeting on Oct. 16.
Dial has previous experience with FCA in high school and also brought the group to Kansas City Kansas Community College, where she attended school and played volleyball prior to coming to Baker. Jones had no prior involvement with FCA until this past summer when she attended an FCA camp and was then asked to start a “huddle” here on Baker’s campus.
Dial and Jones said having the group on campus is more than “bringing athletes together to celebrate Christ.”
“Just be in community and be with our fellow athletes and peers,” Dial said.
The group is made up of Dial and Jones right now since FCA has not had their first official meeting. Both hope that with word of mouth from themselves and other athletes around campus FCA will grow and become popular amongst the Baker community. The two also hope to get “team leaders” from each athletic team to help encourage athletes to join FCA.
The co-presidents anticipate their first meeting to be about thirty minutes of ice-breakers, small games and getting all in attendance acquainted with each other. Then the other thirty minutes will consist of fellowship. Whether that is devotionals, bible study or possibly getting guest speakers to come and share their own testimonies with the group.
Jones said she is beyond excited FCA is coming to campus and that she and others will be able to see “God’s light shine on campus and see how he is working here at Baker.”
Dial hopes that the FCA will help “plant the seedling of Christ” in everyone and also make sure everyone knows that Jesus loves them no matter what and that FCA can be a space where everyone feels that love.
FCA will host their first meeting on Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. outside at Harley Plaza. Dial and Jones encourage anyone who has an interest in joining to reach out to them, or find them on campus and ask them questions.
