Though Baker University is making a effort in making the enrollment process more convenient for students this semester, it has taken away an even better convenience in the process, timing.
Students at Baker have been and will be busy.
The enrollment period for some is one of the more stressful times a student can endure during the semester, and takes place in an already demanding part of the semester.
The move from enrolling at midnight to 7 a.m. will be a major inconvenience for students.
Sure, the records office staff and members of IT will now be available to help students who have issues that prevent them from enrolling.
But at the same time, staff will only be available in Collins Library and the majority of students enroll from their rooms.
Enrolling at midnight allowed students who were involved in sports, organizations and who had jobs to be able to enroll at the same time as everyone else who was eligible.
Generally speaking, midnight is the time when most are wrapping up studying and are already in front of a computer.
Now, students will have to wake up earlier than normal just to enroll from their room, let alone Collins Library.
It is understandable to think it would be more convenient for students to enroll with the assistance of records office staff and IT, but enrolling at 7 a.m. is out of the “norm” for a college student.
Some classes begin as early as 8:30 a.m., which may create a problem if the network is running slow or a student has to make last-minute changes to his or her schedule.
In the past, many students have had problems with the speed and efficiency of the network. The network is commonly to blame for students not being able to enroll in classes vital to graduation.
A more convenient schedule for the enrollment process is to have enrollment begin at an earlier time in the evening, like 10 p.m., when college students would still be awake and Baker could have staff available for a given period of time for the purpose of helping students with enrollment problems.
It would be more convenient for students to be able to enroll at midnight as usual or earlier at 10 p.m., but with the assistance that will be provided at the new time.
The university should be commended for realizing the issues students have with the process and trying to change the enrollment process to a time it felt would be more convenient. Having assistance on hand for students should be beneficial to those students in need of last-second questions, but moving the time to earlier in the evening may be best for the students.
