On Feb. 2, some of the highest profiled music professionals met in Los Angeles, California for the 67th annual Grammy Awards. For background, the Grammys is an opportunity to highlight some of the best music produced within the last year. This year, there was a total of 94 categories/awards that were voted on by the members of the Recording Academy.
There was a large variety of performers at this year’s show – some of the biggest performers in today’s pop genre included Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX. Other favorite performers included Shakira, John Legend and Stevie Wonder.
This year, Kendrick Lamar won the most Grammy Awards for his Drake diss track, “Not Like Us.” Kendrick received a total of five trophies this year. He was awarded for Best Music Video, Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
Beyoncé, the highest earning Grammy award winner is now at a total of 35 Grammys after last week. Her most honorable award was Album of the Year, which was her very first time winning the award. Alongside it being her first time winning the award, she was also the first Black woman to win Album of the Year within this century. This award was presented to Beyoncé by members of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Throughout the entire show, there were various opportunities for both watchers of the show and the attendees to donate to the Los Angeles wildfires relief efforts. There was a QR Code on the screen periodically for the chance to donate money towards the cause. Alongside the opportunities to donate, there were also a few performances to honor those who passed in the fires. The commercials during the show were given to local businesses in LA that were personally affected by the wildfires. By the end of the show, it was announced that they were able to raise a total of $7 million towards MusciCares Fire Relief.
