After breaking its losing streak with a win against Avila University last week, the Baker men’s basketball team carried the momentum on and grabbed a 57-53 victory in overtime against Culver-Stockton College Saturday.
The Wildcats got off to a slow start, falling behind 18-4 early in the first half, but managed to come back and tie the game at 21 going into halftime.
“We missed a lot of shots early, but the guys still kept playing hard and competing and managed to get back in it,” head coach Rick Weaver said.
Senior Malcolm Greer led the team on both ends scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. This was Greer’s fourth double-double of the season.
The ‘Cats played Culver-Stockton in January and lost by two in overtime, but the tables turned and the men were able to grab an overtime victory on the road this time around.
“When we played them here we should have won,” junior Jaris Wommack said. “We had a lot of forced errors that we shouldn’t have had and we went down there and we just played a lot better on their home floor than we did on ours.”
With the back-to-back wins, the team is heading into the end of the regular season ready to take on the competition.
“Well it definitely boosted our confidence,” Greer said. “I think all year we knew that we could win games, because we proved that early on in the season, we just hadn’t found a way to put what we were saying into action.”
The ‘Cats faced William Jewell College Thursday in Collins Center, but results were not available at presstime.
Up next, the men’s team will hit the road and go head-to-head with Missouri Valley College Saturday in Marshall, Mo. The team is expecting a tough game. The ‘Cats faced the Vikings earlier this year and loss by 19 points.
“Missouri Valley is one of the stronger teams in league as far as talent wise, so that’s going to be a tough one,” Weaver said.
The team is hoping to stay strong as it heads into the last stretch of the season.
"I think the best thing is the guys are still competing and playing hard and we are still trying to finish as strong as possible," Weaver said. "We've got an outside shot at the playoffs if we get hot down the stretch."<br/>&#160;
