Audience members at Alpha Psi Omega’s production of “Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead” might get a familiar feeling as they watch the show.
The characters are based on the “Peanuts” characters created by Charles Schulz, but the show is not connected to the comic or cartoon in any way.
“It’s basically about teenagers who are dealing with social events, such as sexual identity,” Alpha Psi Omega President Justin Whittaker said. “It’s based on the “Peanuts” characters in high school dealing with modern events.”
Whittaker said sexual identity is one of the main themes in the production.
“It’s a comedy, but it has some real deep issues in there,” he said. “You’ll probably laugh most of the show, but toward the end, if we’re doing our job right, you might be crying.”
Whittaker is playing Beethoven, which is based on the Schroeder character from “Peanuts.”
“You’ve got your jocks and your emo kids, and I’m the outcast of the group,” Whittaker said.
Junior Denver Little is playing Matt, which is based on the Pigpen character.
“Matt is kind of a disturbed character. He’s preppy. He’s kind of out there. He’s big and loud and obnoxious. He’s kind of a homophobe, which is a stretch for me … ,” Little said. “So he’s got a lot of differing views from me, but he’s a really strong character in that he’s used to make that point of how stupid that kind of hate is. So, I do like being able to play that aspect of him.”
This Alpha Psi Omega production is student directed by junior Megan Nelson, who said she’s enjoying the experience.
“It has been wonderful. The cast is working really hard. All of the techies are working really hard, and everything’s just coming together as planned,” she said.
“It’s been a strenuous journey for us because they’ve been rehearsing every day, but they’re getting all of their work done, and it’s just going really well.”
