A questionable foul and a penalty kick were too much for the Baker University men’s soccer team to overcome as William Jewell College won 2-1 Wednesday.
Despite the loss, senior goalkeeper Bret Clark said he was pleased with the play of his team in Liberty, Mo.
“Once again, we played really well,” Clark said. “We just haven’t gotten the results we need.”
A quick restart after a questionable foul called on Baker led to the first goal, senior Josh McDaniel said.
“Early in the first half, we had a questionable foul called on us. Then the ref let Jewell restart quickly, and we weren’t set up,” McDaniel said. “That gave them an early lead.”
The second William Jewell goal came on a penalty kick in the second half.
The Wildcats did find the net in the second half.
Sophomore midfielder Matt Hodges, a native of Overland Park, scored for the Wildcats late in the game.
William Jewell entered the game at No. 16 in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics rankings.
“They were a good team; they just came out and played well against us,” Clark said.
On Saturday, the team traveled to Hannibal, Mo., to play Hannibal-LaGrange University. The Wildcats lost 2-1.
On Sunday the team went north to play at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo. The ‘Cats picked up a conference win, beating Culver-Stockton 2-1.
The Wildcats will stay on the road for their next game as they travel to Columbia, Mo. to match up against Columbia College at 3 p.m. Saturday.
