On Wednesday, Feb. 18, the Student Activities Council hosted their second Wingstop Wednesday in the Union. The event started at noon and provided students walking through with free wings with several flavor options including honey barbecue, buffalo, and garlic parmesan, as well as french fries and ranch.
In the fall, SAC’s first Wingstop-related event involved giving out wings in the Union on Friday, Nov. 7, the day before Baker football’s final home football game, as a tie-in with the game’s theme of “Roast the Ravens.”
“Last semester we came up with it a couple weeks before we were going to do it. We just thought it would be funny to give out chicken wings right before we played Benedictine,” Curless said.
However, SAC found they were ill-prepared for the unexpected popularity of the event.
“This time, I definitely bought more wings, because last [semester] we ran out of 300 wings in like 25 minutes,” Curless said.
Curless bumped the order up from 300 to 400 wings, and made sure there was a wings-per-person limit. Stirton said that the changes made a big difference.
“It took about 45 minutes today because we were regulating a little more on how many wings you could actually take,” she said. “Last semester we didn’t really know how many people were going to come, so we definitely learned.”
For Stirton, who just joined SAC’s general board in October, an event like this is proof that SAC is able to bring the entire campus together
“Seeing [that] was really interesting to me and I wanted to be part of something that was bigger than just me,” she said.
Now that it has had two very successful outings, SAC is planning to continue Wingstop Wednesday.
“This is probably going to end up being a semesterly thing. Honestly, it’s pushed us to think about other opportunities like this that do end up being really easy for us. I think it shows us a market for very simple ideas for events that are really just bringing things to campus that you guys can’t get to without going to Lawrence,” Curless said. “I would love to just start catering food for you guys.”
Curless also expressed how impactful being involved in campus events can be for students.
“I think that a lot of students don’t realize how much say they can have in what these events look like,” he said. “My office is always open, I love hearing good ideas.”
