For over ten years, Baker University has celebrated remarkable students who stand out from the graduating class. Established in May 2011, the Outstanding Senior Award honors seniors who embody Baker’s mission, vision, and values, while also showing superior achievement in academics and leadership.
Students are nominated by fellow students, faculty and staff. The deadline to nominate the class of 2026 seniors is March 31. The finalists are chosen through a committee, consisting of two staff members, two coaches and two students, Dr. Cassy Bailey, VP of Enrollment Management, chairs the committee.
“This committee is rotated every year.” Bailey said.” Students who are nominated are sent an email and fill out a package that is beyond their resumes. In the package, the nominees tell the committee what they have done that not only fit the requirements of the award, but how it fits into Baker’s mission, vision, and values.”
This tradition is celebrated during graduation so that the Baker community can come together in honoring the recipients.
“Three to five seniors are picked through a vote from the committee and the recipients who win the award are announced during graduation and receive a plaque. They also receive a small check that was started from previous recipients to help celebrate them. This is called Outstanding Senior Endowed Fund which was a gift from the Class of 2021,” said Bailey.
As Baker continues the tradition of the Outstanding Senior Award, the focus remains on highlighting the level of the recipient’s contribution than just one standard of achievement. Influence from the recipients who are chosen each year can be felt through all corners of campus life.
