The Baker volleyball team showed no mercy against Avila University Tuesday in Collins Center, crushing the Eagles in three games.
The Wildcats bounced back in conference play after a disappointing loss to MidAmerica Nazarene University a week earlier.
Sophomore Brooke Pryor and senior Alexis Pryor helped lead the team past the Eagles, combining for 29 kills.
Freshman Brooke Allen said the Pryor sisters constantly help pick the team up with big plays.
“When they make plays, they make amazing plays that change the momentum of the game,” Allen said. “If they make a kill or a block, it’s huge.”
Winning the first game only by five, 25-20, the Wildcats refused to show the Eagles any sign of hope in the second, crushing them 25-12.
The third game proved a little more difficult, but the Wildcats handled Avila and put the Eagles away 25-22.
“We didn’t overlook this team, and we are very proud we took care of them in three (games),” head coach Kathy Allen said.
“We played with confidence, and we weren’t playing like scared freshmen,” Brooke Allen said. “We were coming out of the scared phase; that’s mainly what we were working on before the tournament, was to be confident.”
Freshman Rachael Solis attributed the wins to a few difficult days of practice in which the team refocused.
“We ran our offense a lot more in practice and really worked hard,” Solis said. “We had confidence against the teams we played, but we went out there and respected them.”
Coming off the loss to MidAmerica last week, coach Allen said she made some changes to the lineup, including an addition to the team, sophomore Christina Delladio.
“I’ve made substantial lineup changes,” coach Allen said. “I have the deepest amount of talent I’ve ever had, I just need to find the right combinations.”
At 1 p.m. Saturday the Wildcats will take on Ottawa University for another go-around in Atchison, followed by a matchup at 3 p.m. against Bethel College of Newton.
The team is 10-6 overall and 1-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
