Imagine the difference between a town with practically nothing in it and a town that appears to have everything someone could need.
Throw in a few electronic department stores in the latter and you have Lawrence.
Put a beautiful college campus in the middle of nowhere and you have Baldwin City.
There may not seem to be any difference in these places to people who have come from places like New York, Florida or California, who are used to the broadness and the immense proportions of the cities – but for a small-town kid from a small suburb in an average-sized place, it is.
Although living in a big area has some advantages, there it also has disadvantages. The same could definitely be said for living in a smaller area.
Lawrence and Baldwin share different characteristics in the difference of size on an average scale.
Although Baldwin may appear to be a small, empty town of insignificance, I believe the fact that it is small only brings out more beauty in all of its features. Being in a small place seems to heighten the awareness of nature, an awareness that you might not get in a bigger place.
Sure, big places have parks and little pretty areas where you can observe nature, but it’s not quite like a small place where you can see nature in it’s entirety at all times.
In areas like the city there also may be pollution in the air, unlike here, where the air is so fresh that one could smell the morning dew of the grass.
However, small places do lack excitement in the simple fact that resources are limited.
For instance, Baldwin is without so much that if a person was to come here without anything and try to buy all the necessities, electronics and entertainment required for a modern household they just couldn’t do it.
Lawrence on the other hand might have all of that and then some.
Bigger places offer more versatility and diversity than places that are miniscule in comparison. It also seems that you can get more of what you need and in abundance in a larger place.
Not only are such aspects different but so are the people.
In a small place, it seems as though people are more easygoing because they are at ease. In a larger place, people tend to rush, unaware of other people.
In a small place, it is easier for everyone to get to know everyone. Whereas in a bigger place, you could be in a huge crowd and not a single person would know what your name is.
Sometimes however, the fact that more people are in the area that you live in means that you are just going to have to go out of your way to meet those people.
Some see the big city as a way for people to respect each other and accept each other more. <br/>When I asked an elderly woman last Saturday on Family Day how she felt living in Chicago she told me, "It is very peaceful here, but in some ways … I think the big city teaches more people how to live with others."When I asked an elderly woman last Saturday on Family Day how she felt living in Chicago she told me, "It is very peaceful here, but in some ways … I think the big city teaches more people how to live with others."

Contemplating this comment, it is understood why people used to living in big places would grow to enjoy it.
So is a small area better than a big area? There really is no answer to that question. In the end, it just depends on who you are and where you’re from.
