The Baker University men’s soccer team is continuing to creep towards perfection, as they took two more matches over the weekend.
The ’Cats moved to 8-0 on the season with a 5-0 win over Oklahoma Baptist University and a 4-2 win over Midland University. The Wildcats’ offense has taken off, scoring 14 goals in their last four games.
Head coach Nate Houser said the early goals really helped get the team rolling against Oklahoma Baptist.
“I think we were able to finish a chance early, and that did a lot for our confidence,” Houser said. “We made some changes at the end of the half to get the third goal I think (that) really, really did a lot for us.”
After defeating a formidable opponent in No. 16 Oklahoma Baptist, the Wildcats had to deal with the emotions and fight the potential for a letdown.
“I think the biggest thing for us with the Midland game was it was dealing with playing after an emotional high,” Houser said. “Mistakes will happen, and I thought we answered very well.”
One of the key pieces over the weekend was junior Donny George, who was named the HAAC Defensive Player of the Week. George added two goals against Oklahoma Baptist to complete his impact for the ’Cats over the weekend.
“I believe in myself that I’m a threat, a danger and I was lucky enough to get two goals over the weekend,” George said. “Baker does hard work and grinds out results. That’s what we do best and that’s what we’ll keep doing.”
George, the other Wildcat defenders and sophomore Matt Bickley, the goalkeeper, have only allowed three goals in the team’s eight wins.
Although Baker moved up four spots in the NAIA polls to No. 10 in the nation, the ’Cats are not satisfied.
Houser said he is always looking for ways to push the team and keep them on track to continue to improve.
“We have an idea of what we should be and we share that with the team,” he said. “We say, you know, this is what the picture should look like after we color in all the spaces. “
The Wildcats will get a bit of a break, as they will not return to action until Tuesday against Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
BU will take advantage of the time to get some rest, both physically and mentally.
“We’re just taking a couple of days off,” senior Nick Ebmeyer said. “The goal right now is to be healthy and ready.”
Houser is not worried about the long layoff affecting the team and will not put any expectations on how well the Wildcats can play this season.
“There’s a quote that I repeat to myself every morning, ‘to define is to limit,’” Houser said. “Trying to define what this team is or anything before it’s finished would be unfair.”
Aside from a match against defending national champion Hastings College, the game against Oklahoma Wesleyan will be the Wildcats final nonconference match.
The ’Cats will play their conference opener against Central Methodist University Sunday Oct. 2 in Fayette, Mo.
