We all strive for perfection, but the Baker University men’s soccer team has achieved it thus far.
The ’Cats moved to 10-0 on the season, grabbing their first conference win over Central Methodist University by a final score of 3-2.
The Wildcats struck early and often, with two quick goals from junior Odaine Sinclair in the 20th and 23rd minutes of the match.
Sinclair credits his teammates for getting him the ball.
“I give credit to all my team in general because we’ve been working hard,” Sinclair said. “(Senior Tom Lowndes) gave me a true pass and so I could finish at one time.”
The third and final goal for Baker came in the 33rd minute of the game from sophomore Andy Griffin. Like Sinclair, Griffin credits his teammates for the assist on the goal.
“The defender followed Odaine (Sinclair) and then just he barely touched (the ball) by,” Griffin said. “Then I was able to take it and split their two centerbacks, and then it’s just one on one with the goalie.”
Central Methodist made a push later in the game, with two goals in the 61st and 65th minutes of the game, but the ’Cats held on to close out the victory.
Even so, head coach Nate Houser sees room for improvement from his team.
“It comes down to moments,” Houser said. “We had a chance to go up four-nothing and didn’t finish … you take shortcuts because you don’t really realize how dangerous the other team is, and they were dangerous even though we were up 3-0.”
In the end though, the ’Cats still hold an imposing 10-0 record.
However, with the conference season opening up, games and matchups will continue to become more and more difficult for the Wildcats.
Houser believes there are no easy wins in the conference.
“I don’t know if there are any easy games,” Houser said. “If you’d asked me four years ago when I started, I could have named, ‘Yeah we’re going to win these three games.’ But now there’s nothing I see.”
With the new challenges of conference, however, comes renewed energy and intensity.
“I’d say there is a little bit more excitement … a little more riding on it,” Griffin said. “I wouldn’t say it’s pressure, but at the same time it is a little pressure just knowing that these are the teams we compete with for our conference. ”
The ’Cats will face Graceland University at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Liston Stadium.
