From world premieres to new challenges in music, this year’s annual concert choir performance is one that has both faculty and students excited.

The concert will contain music from the 17th century up to the present performed by three of Baker’s choral groups as well as the high school choir from Wichita Collegiate School.

The concert will include the world premiere of the “Benediction of the Nations,” a song that has been dedicated to two Baker alumni, Jared Grantham and his wife, Carol.

“I think it is great performing a song that was written for Baker and someone that gave Baker so much,” junior Adam Tebben said. “It shows a sense of honor and respect for that person.”

Jared Grantham graduated from Baker University in 1958. Since he graduated from the university, Grantham has served as a trustee for the university and has become a world-renowned physician.

“The piece is beautifully composed with text that really speaks to me,” senior Jessica Lenhart said. “It talks about peace, and I think that in today’s society people forget to stop and think about others.”

The concert also will include a song written in 2002 by accomplished composer, conductor and lecturer Eric Whitacre called “Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine.” Whitacre is the topic for one of this year’s First Year 150 classes.

“I’m excited to sing Eric Whitacre’s ‘Leonardo Dreams of his Flying Machine,'” Lenhart said. “The piece is absolutely astounding. It’s challenging and fun.”

The wide variety of songs with different challenges, as well as the privilege of presenting a brand new song, has left students excited for the upcoming concert.

“It’s always a little different to practice than it is to perform,” Tebben said. “It allows us to show off all the hard work we have given toward the class and put it to a more recognizable use.”

The concert is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Rice Auditorium.
