After weeks of discussion about censorship and free speech, the Baker University student body will have the final say concerning whether student senate will pass a resolution addressing censorship on campus.
At Tuesday’s student senate meeting, senators voted to allow students the opportunity to express their opinion on censorship in the form of an online survey.
All students will be sent a link to the survey beginning at noon today and ending at noon on Monday. Student senate will then decide whether to pass a resolution condemning censorship on campus and supporting free expression.
Junior Jon Xenos commented on senate’s vote last week to not pass the resolution concerning censorship.
“Just because we didn’t pass it does not mean that we support censorship in any way, shape or form,” he said.
In other news, Xenos said he is interested in finding people to help establish an all-campus philanthropy for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
“Basically, we’re looking for students who are really serious and willing to be very involved with it,” he said.
Sophomore Class Vice President Brittany Coleman said the Community Issues Committee has established some goals to help guide next year’s committee members. The goals include things such as a hands-on community service project every semester and fund raising all year for an unspecified organization in Baldwin City.
Dean of Students John Frazier encouraged senators to remember to respect everyone’s opinions on different issues.
“Differences of opinions are great,” he said. “But please don’t lose track of respect for one another.”
The semester’s final student senate meeting will take place at 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Union cafeteria.
