Something happened to me while watching the Chiefs game against the New York Jets two weeks ago. I saw the faintest glimpse of hope.
Then last Sunday, while the Chiefs found yet another interesting way to add one to the loss column, that sense of intrigue was there again.
The source of all my interest was second year quarterback Tyler Thigpen, who miraculously led the Kansas City offense down field and put points on the scoreboard.
Thigpen’s recent success has led to a burst of enthusiasm for Chiefs fans.
The Chiefs have struggled this year. Then the Coastal Carolina product decided to stop looking out of place and started being a playmaker.
Granted he still sends a befuddled gaze toward the sideline to get the next play almost on schedule, but the fact is, he’s making plays.
He now even has more touchdowns (five), than interceptions (four), which is a definite plus.
At first his lack of accuracy really overshadowed his athleticism and overall arm strength.
But recently the balls have stopped floating so high.
It’s too early to say if Thigpen is that young quarterback with lots of potential and leadership skills that the Chiefs have been yearning for during the last two decades.
But the mere notion that Thigpen is that guy is why Chiefs fans have started watching again.
“Pro Football Prospectus” projected Thigpen to have 17 touchdowns, 16 interceptions and 2,820 passing yards. With eight games left, those projections could be pretty dang accurate.
Thigpen was drafted two years ago by the Vikings, who tried to sneak him onto the practice squad.
Props to the Chiefs’ scouting department for recognizing Thigpen’s potential.
Despite the loss, flashes of potential occurred on the field Sunday against the Bucs. Thanks Mr. Thigpen.
