It was Senior Night Saturday at Liston Stadium and the evening couldn’t have ended better for the Baker women’s soccer team.
The team honored seniors Pam Brumit, Sara Matthews, Tracy Light and Ashley Isbell before the game then quickly got to work. With spirits high, the women stomped their conference opponent Central Methodist University 5-1.
For the past few games the team has struggled to land open opportunities in the net, but Saturday night everything came together to send the women on a scoring spree that left Central Methodist struggling to keep up.
“We finished our chances that we had and just played our game like we know how to,” Matthews said.
Getting a good lead early in the game gave the ‘Cats the opportunity to work on various plays and sharpen their skills as they prepare for the conference tournament.
“It was really a chance for us to try out stuff that we needed to work on,” sophomore Jenny Haynes said. “Trying to play the right balls and just working on finishing and putting balls in the net.”
With senior night on everyone’s mind, the team also went into the game knowing it may be the last home game of the season.
“We had our heads in the game from the start,” Matthews said. “We knew it was our last home game, so we wanted to make sure we could end on a good note here at home.”
The women played their rescheduled game Oct. 23 against William Jewell College but weren’t able to pull out the results they were looking for. They had a 1-0 lead on Jewell Oct. 21 but the game was canceled after the first half due to the weather. During the rescheduled game the ‘Cats tied 1-1 in double overtime.
With a 4-2-1 record in conference, the women will hit the road Saturday and go head-to-head with Avila University in hopes to add another victory to that record. <br/>"Avila is supposed to be a lot better this year," sophomore Haley Oborny said."Avila is supposed to be a lot better this year," sophomore Haley Oborny said.
