Everything came together for the Baker women’s soccer team as it started off the playoff tournament with a 4-0 shutout Monday against MidAmerica Nazarene University.
Two back-to-back goals from sophomore Haley Oborny and one from junior Mikayla Medlock put the team at a 3-0 advantage going into the second half.
Oborny said the excitement for the conference tournament had the team pumped up for the first playoff game.
“We came out hard and completely dominated them,” she said. “We had several opportunities to score.”
Nailing nearly every opportunity at the net in the first half, the team didn’t give MidAmerica any mercy in the second half. The women continued their scoring spree and took the lead to 4-0 with a goal from freshman Ashley Ukena in the second half.’
Sophomore Chelsea Dunn said spectators saw a performance the team has been building up to all season, and MidAmerica didn’t stand a chance from the start.
“This was the first time that we really looked like the team that we are supposed to look like,” Dunn said.
Dunn said before the game, coach Nate Houser gave the team valuable advice that left his athletes playing hard and enjoying the work they put in.
“The one thing our coach said before the game was that ‘the most important thing today is that you guys have fun,’ and I think that is exactly what we did,” Dunn said.
With the first tournament win under its belt, the team moved on to face Lindenwood University Wednesday night.
Losing to Lindenwood 2-1 in double overtime earlier in the season, the team came out this game seeking revenge.
The ‘Cats came out fighting and scored in the first half, but Lindenwood quickly answered taking the score to 1-1 at halftime. Both teams remained scoreless through the second half pushing the game into overtime.
“Everyone was fighting. There were chances here and there, but nothing fell in the back of the net,” senior Sara Matthews said.
The battle dragged on to a second overtime but neither team could score.
Lindenwood won the game on penalty kicks, eliminating the Wildcats.
