Since I have gotten back to Baldwin City for the second semester, the weather has been my worst enemy, especially after spending a month in sunny, southern New Mexico, where the only ice to be found is in glasses.
Normally I don’t have much to complain about when it comes to Baker’s campus.
We have a pretty little pond on campus, big trees, old, but beautiful, buildings and you can walk anywhere in about five minutes.
The one thing I wish the school would take better care of are the sidewalks that turn to sheets of ice every time there is even a little precipitation.
I understand it is hard to treat every single sidewalk and pathway, but I shouldn’t have to ice skate to class, either.
On my way to my first class of the day, I fell forward walking from the Horn and Markham apartments across the street to the New Living Center.
Thanks to that slippery spot, I sported mud-covered jeans for the rest of my classes.
One of the biggest trouble spots on campus is under the second floor walkways at the apartments.
While walking back to my room from a quick trip to the grocery store, I slipped and fell for the second time that day.
I got inside and started putting away my groceries, only to find that my fall caused my cinnamon rolls to break open.
I wasn’t too pleased.
A few minutes later, while trying to figure out how to make my now bruised butt feel better and what to do with my damaged cinnamon rolls, I heard a scream and a smack.
I looked out the window to see another girl planted in the same spot I had just fallen.
Just minutes after her, there was another scream and another victim.
The icy spot struck once again, except this time a guy fell and his friends walking with him just laughed in his face.
Thanks to the untreated ice, in a matter of five minutes, cinnamon rolls were ruined, a guy was ridiculed by his friends and three students now have sore bums.
So, this is my plea to BU to either close campus on those icy days or to get every sidewalk taken care of.
