Last Saturday marked Mungano’s third annual tailgate, bringing mouth-watering food and a way for students, staff, current and previous members of Mungano to socialize.
Multicultural Affairs Coordinator Ron Holden said not only was this year a good turnout, but it was good to have so many people there who wanted to come for fun.
“Having this tailgate is such a good way to network with former members who are already involved with the working world, because it lets the alumni interact with the students and share their own experiences with them,” he said. “This year, we were pleased to have the original founder of Mungano, Jesse Milan, come and speak to everyone and share what the organization means to him and how he has benefited from it.”
Maybe it was the ribs or maybe it was the weather, but this year the number of administrators who attended the tailgate was the highest of any previous years.
Bruce Anderson, associate professor of political science, said he brought his family to the tailgate and had a really good time.
“I definitely planned on going because I knew my family and I would have fun and be able to socialize with a lot of different people,” he said. “I got to hang out, eat ribs and talk about football. It was a good day.”
With the high attendance of people, Holden thinks it is key to have a good number of administrators come, because it lets them interact with the students outside of the day-to-day school routine.
“I had so much fun being able to see some people that I had not seen for a couple of years, not to mention meet the new Dean of Students (Cassy Bailey) and talk to some of my professors,” senior Michelle Burton said. “The only thing I would have changed would be that I was actually on time so that I could have spent more time with everyone.”
In addition to the tailgate, from 8-10 p.m. Thursday in Harter Union, Mungano will be holding its fourth annual Date Auction-a fundraiser in which members from each organization on campus can volunteer one person to be auctioned off for a one-on-one dessert, compliments of Mungano.
Senior Davon Davis said this would be the third year he would be spokesperson for the auction.
“I love hosting this event because it is always so much fun-you can never predict what will happen,” he said. “There’s usually around 20 to 30 participants that are auctioned off and bidding starts at $5.”
Mungano is asking for a $1 donation or a canned food item from those who attend the auction.
