It’s the Oscars of music. The night where country, pop, rap and R&B stars unite. It’s the night Stephen Colbert so eloquently deemed the “night celebrities congratulate each other.” Sunday night was Grammys night.
The funny thing is, as much I am a fan of music, I don’t think I’ve ever really watched the Grammys. I’ve often wondered why, but some of the performances and award winners answered my ponderings fairly quickly.
The big problem of the night for me was Taylor Swift. Now, before you start calling me the next Kayne West, hear me out. Her duet with Stevie Nicks was, to put it bluntly, atrocious.
I thought Stevie was great, and that's why I fought putting the TV on mute for Taylor's performance.I thought Stevie was great, and that's why I fought putting the TV on mute for Taylor's performance.

Because of this, and other things, I didn’t think Taylor deserved her four Grammy wins. And the fact that she dropped and broke one of them while posing for a picture later that night makes me wonder if that should’ve been taken as a sign someone had made a mistake with her winnings.
But there were other things about the show that made me question why I even had the Grammys turned on.
Like Colbert’s iffy monologue.
He hit the nail on the head when he said the night was all about celebrities congratulating celebrities, but everything else seemed odd.
Especially the questions directed at his daughter that just seemed really posed. Her facial expressions didn’t seem natural at all. That and what seemed like his diss of Susan Boyle’s appearance made for a rather mediocre performance.
However, not everything was a monstrosity that night. Actually, the Grammys kicked off with one of my favorites, Lady Gaga, who did a duet with Sir Elton John that left me speechless.
And Pink’s singing, acrobatic performance looked and sounded pretty amazing too.
And of course, how could you forget the Michael Jackson tribute of his song “Earth Song” in 3D. It was awesome.
And totally made wearing those dorky 3D glasses worth it.
If anything, I would have loved to hear more MJ songs. But seeing his kids, Prince and Paris, accept an award in his honor was very cool. Not to mention very brave of them, too.
Bottom line, while there were times I felt I was wasting three-and-a-half hours of my life watching it, I found that a lot of performances made it worthwhile.Bottom line, while there were times I felt I was wasting three-and-a-half hours of my life watching it, I found that a lot of performances made it worthwhile.

As for whether I will watch the Grammys next year, I’ll put on my poker face and bet probably not.
