All eyes were on senior Aaron Hannon after he became the first Baker track and field athlete to win an event at the Kansas Relays.

It seems like we’ve been seeing this quite a bit this season with Baker sports. Not that Baker hasn’t had great accomplishments in recent years – note the national tournament appearances in 2008 for the football and men’s soccer teams – but this year the impressive seems to be becoming the normal.

Just look at how many feats we saw from athletes and teams in 2009-2010.

The volleyball team had its first-ever 30-win season and the most consecutive wins in school history with 22. The men’s soccer team was ranked No. 4 in the NAIA at one point in the season, the highest ranking in school history, and the men’s 4×100-meter relay team broke the school record in consecutive weeks.

The wrestling program did went 4-0 in duals and sent 10 athletes to the NAIA Championships in the first year of the program’s existence, while the women’s soccer team was one game away from reaching the national tournament and winning the HAAC, a feat it had not reached in more than a decade.

The softball team may not have a winning record, but has reached the postseason for the first time in four years.

Hannon showed he could compete, and win, with athletes from NCAA Division I schools, while other athletes took home national hardware. Soccer player Matt Griffin was a third-team All-American and juniors Chelsea Dunn, soccer, and Emily Gibson, basketball, were honorable mention All-American selections.

I am leaving accomplishments out I realize, and I apologize, but this just proves the point – Baker athletes have accomplished so much this season that I can’t remember all of them for this column, and we need to acknowledge this.

Sports fans love backing successful teams, and Baker fans have had their choice of quality teams in which to root for this year.

The Wildcats have proven they can compete with the best of the best in the HAAC and NAIA and are finding their way into the Baker record books.

Take a look at the athletes and teams that are competing right now, because they are leaving a legacy that could be remembered at Baker for years to come.
