The Student Activities Council and Student Development are teaming up to bring a new way to showcase talent at this year’s Family Weekend in the first annual “Baker’s Got Talent” program.
“It is an open forum for anyone on campus to participate in,” Career Development Coordinator Kelly Burns said. “We wanted to have it on Family Day so we could showcase different talent we have here on campus. We have everything from singing, poetry readings and Loud Noises performing.”
The lineup for the performances already includes a number of different Baker student-involved groups. The Loud Noises Improvisation Troupe, BU Jazz Combo, Eight on Eighth Octet, DixieKats Dixieland Band, Baker Brass Quintet and the BU Percussion Ensemble are slated to perform.
Sophomore Scott Ireland will be in two of the night’s talents. Both of the groups he is in have been working on the pieces they will be performing since the start of school. Now all of the practicing will pay off.
“I am going to be in the Percussion Ensemble,” Ireland said. “Also, I am in Baker’s Symphonic Ensemble. I am excited about the Percussion Ensemble because we have been working hard, and since the beginning of school putting it all together.”
With all the hard work gone into creating the program, senior Emily Beye, SAC president, sees the show as a positive way to not only try something new, but also bring out some hidden talent within Baker’s campus.
"This is the first year for Baker's Got Talent, and we are always looking to try new things," Beye said. "It is good that students can be in charge and participate. It will be a lot of fun."<br/>In hopes of making this an annual event, Burns looks forward to seeing more different acts be willing to perform in the future. In hopes of making this an annual event, Burns looks forward to seeing more different acts be willing to perform in the future.

“We are looking for different talents,” Burns said. “We hope once it catches on, we will have more of a variety, like dancing. There are just so many different talents out there.”
