Kellam Jones, 17, Lawrence, awaits a judge’s ruling to charge him as a juvenile or adult for the June 7 attempted robbery and shooting that left one Baker student dead.
Cheryl Wright, assistant to Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson, said a ruling charging Jones as a juvenile or adult based on a hearing held Aug. 28 could come near the end of the week or take even longer.
“(The judge) doesn’t have a deadline,” she said. “So we’re at the whim of when that (ruling) comes out.”
Jones was 16 at the time of the alleged attempted robbery June 7 that left his accomplice from McLouth, Gage Hauk, 18, and Baker student Roland Klundt, 20, dead.
It’s alleged Jones and Hauk went to Klundt’s residence at 1311 Delaware Street to commit a robbery. Police allege Klundt shot Hauk and Jones then shot Klundt.
If Jones is charged as an adult in the case, he will face more serious penalties, such as a longer jail sentence if convicted, and his court proceedings will be public.
