Two-time All-Conference tight end… Captain of the 1986 national runner-up football team… Joe Montana’s quarterback coach… National Football League Coach of the Year…
If the above credentials can’t get one’s face carved into a Baker sports monument, I’m unsure what will.
While McCarthy only spent two years at Baker, 1985-1986, his impact is everlasting.
He won back-to-back conference championships and helped propel what is arguably the most successful Baker sports team into the school’s only national title game.
After coaching stints at the University of Pittsburgh, the Carolina Panthers, the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Francisco 49ers and the New Orleans Saints, he landed the job of Green Bay Packers head coach in 2006.
One year later, he had his team Lambeau-leaping into the NFC championship game against the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants.
For his efforts, he was named the best coach in the NFL.
At the 101 awards, he attributed a considerable amount of his success to former Baker head coach Charlie Richard, and said he learned how to be a man during his time at Baker.
Oh yeah, he also donated $500,000 to the Baker University football team once he re-signed with Green Bay last season. Someone get the chisel ready – he’s in.
