Director of the Career Development Center Susan Wade is doing her part to help Baker University students to prepare for their futures with a plethora of career orientations, internship seminars, job fairs and several other programs related to the career world.
“There are many programs set up to help students choose their major; we know that this can be a confusing and stressful process, so we like to make it as easy as possible,” Wade said.
Some of these processes involve designing a career plan, getting assistance on writing a resume and doing one-on-one mock interviews. Another program is the online resource Vault. Vault provides students with information on over 3,000 companies and occupational profiles, as well as input from current professionals, tips for resumes, cover letters, interviewing and networking.
Wade said this process really allows students to learn about themselves and explore options in many different fields.
The September events were kicked off with the accounting employer reception held Wednesday, which allowed students to ask an alumni panel questions concerning working in private and public accounting.
Sophomore Connie Meyer said the reception was beneficial.
“I learned it’s very important to get on the ball with internships and networking,” she said. “I know of a lot more opportunities after hearing (the alumni) talk.”
Assistant Director of Career Development Cassie Gilmore said the alumni ranged from the classes of 1978-2005 and from different fields of accounting.
“Students had the opportunity to question them about internships and the likelihood of getting hired from an internship,” she said.
Activities to be held in October include Internships 101 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 5 in the Career Development Center. This meeting will provide students with information on how to find internships.
The University of Missouri- Kansas City Internship Fair is scheduled for Oct. 25 at UMKC. Another upcoming event will be a Career Exploration Week from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the week of Nov. 6-10 in Harter Union lobby. During the week each day will be designated to focus on a specific career field.
Wade said she encourages everyone to attend CDC events to obtain helpful hints and information in making the right career choice.
