Dan Brown’s popular novel “The Da Vinci Code” will be the topic of discussion when Professor of Religion George Wiley leads a criticism of the novel at the university forum.
“My thesis is ‘The Da Vinci Code’ is a great read, but it’s bad history,” Wiley said.
While Brown’s novel is considered fiction, Wiley plans to criticize Brown’s approach to spiritual issues.
“There’s a note at the front of the book that states the spiritual matter is factual, so he opens himself up to the kind of criticism I’ll be giving,” he said. “Brown says Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had children, and there’s just little or no evidence to support this.”
Wiley said he will speak for a half hour before opening the floor up for discussion.
The forum, which is titled “Dan Brown’s ‘The Da Vinci Code’: Great Page Turner, Bad History,” will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Audio-Visual Room in Owens Musical Arts Building. The forum is open to the campus.
