Baker University’s music department is trying some new approaches to the 79th Annual Christmas Candlelight Vespers at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the First United Methodist Church.
In the past, the concert choir, university singers, chamber singers and orchestra performed holiday songs for audiences.
However, this being his first year in charge of Vespers, Director of Choral Activities Matthew Potterton will be bringing some fresh ensembles, songs and performances to the concert.
Included in this year’s lineup will be senior Rachel Kilian’s blue grass band, a percussion ensemble, a brass ensemble and an African carol. Also added to the performance is a song the choir will sing while being accompanied by the orchestra.
“I thought it was time to try something new,” Potterton said. “Everything is falling into place pretty well for this being my first Vespers.”
Sophomore Scott Ireland will not only have the opportunity to sing at Vespers, but also perform a piece for the percussion ensemble. For one of the musical pieces, the choir will join the percussion performers.
“I am looking forward to the performance,” Ireland said. “I like that they are incorporating different ensembles. It is nice to be able to watch other performances, and not just be the one performing.”
Potterton has even changed the way Vespers is organized. For one of the university singers’ songs, the group will be moving to the back of the church to perform for added effect.
“I think singing in the back is a cool effect,” sophomore Stephanie Berg said. “If I had to pick my favorite song it would have to be the last one. Everyone enters, and we all sing “Silent Night” by candlelight. You just cannot help but feel the Christmas spirit.”
With all the different songs, ensembles and performances coming together, there will be plenty of music for the audience to enjoy.
"There really is not one piece I am looking forward to more than another," Potterton said. "Everyone just seems excited to be able to perform what they have been working on."<br/>&#160;
