Police are investigating a reported rape involving a Baker student over the weekend at the campus apartments.
The Baldwin City Police Department responded to a report early Sunday morning that a 20-year-old woman was raped at the Horn and Markham apartments.
A Baker student is a suspect, Police Chief Mike McKenna said. No arrests have been made, he said.
The incident occurred between 11 p.m. Saturday and 1:30 a.m. Sunday, McKenna said.
“The report was made, and it’s an active investigation,” he said Monday.
Associate Dean of Students Teresa Clounch was among the first university officials to arrive at the scene early Sunday morning.
“The security staff called me and let me know that the police wanted to talk to me about the incident,” Clounch said. “They informed me that there was an incident that took place, so I came over to the apartments and the police had secured the apartment.”
Dean of Students Cassy Bailey said the Johnson County Crime Scene Unit arrived on campus Sunday to scan the apartment.
“Police quarantined the area for further police investigation and evidence collection,” Bailey said.
Four Baker students, men who live in the apartment, were asked to leave the scene until the process was complete, Bailey said.
“At that time the students weren’t able to stay there so we were providing them alternate housing for that time frame,” Clounch said.
From there, Bailey said she interviewed the alleged victim, students, suspects and witnesses to determine what happened.
Bailey said alcohol was involved and was a contributing factor to the reported crime.
