After being implemented in the spring, My Baker has replaced Campus Connect as the new computer system for students and faculty on the Baker University Web site this fall.
“We chose to replace Campus Connect because it was about 15 to 20 years old,” Simon Maxwell, vice president of information technology, said.
Maxwell said My Baker is just a small part of a much larger structure.
“My Baker is a component of a system called CampusVue,” he said. “Students only see about one-fourth of the program.”
Maxwell said Campus Connect was replaced late last semester with My Baker. He said a committee made up of members from many departments chose the new system.
“We also hired a selection consultant to help with the decision,” he said.
Maxwell said CampusVue was chosen over two other vendors, Jenzabar CX and SCT Banner in a 20-2 vote. Among the deciding factors were ease of adaptation, cost effectiveness and the ease with which the information technology department could maintain the program.
“CampusVue also has a Microsoft base product, and so it has the Microsoft look and feel most people are familiar with,” he said.
Web Services Administrator Toby Ebel said My Baker has all the features people associate with Campus Connect, plus a few extras.
“The only feature missing is that teachers can’t see student pictures when they pull up their class lists,” he said. “With My Baker we can’t go in and change the code to fix all the problems.”
Senior Kyle Paul said he is striving to learn how to use the new site.
“It’s a little harder to navigate, but I’m still just getting used to it,” he said.
Ebel said even with a newer system, there are some difficulties that need to be worked out, but the only feature that doesn’t work is the degree audit.
Ebel said the degree audit feature of My Baker is supposed to allow students to perform their own audit.
“The reason the degree audit is on is so students can see their unofficial transcripts,” he said. “We are going to upgrade the system sometime in the fall. We hope to get degree audit online as soon as we are sure it is working.”
