It didn’t take long for former Baker University baseball standout Vidal Nuno to make a name for himself professionally.
Last year’s ace signed with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, a Class A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, and has been playing for the squad for about two months. Nuno posted a perfect 5-0 record during regular season.
“I was in the bullpen the first month and then someone got hurt so I’ve been a starter for the last month and a half,” he said.
At the season’s end, Nuno held a 2.05 ERA. However, because the Scrappers advanced to the playoffs, Nuno had a chance to showcase his arm in the postseason. He grabbed his first victory in playoff action Wednesday to send Mahoning Valley to the championship round. He gave up just one hit in five innings on the hill, allowing no runs to cross the plate.
“It’s fun,” Nuno said. “You do your thing and try to be successful and meet new guys and teammates who are all trying to be successful.”
