Students had the opportunity to pie their professors at the first annual Pi Day celebration Wednesday.
Freshman Libby Steele, a member of the Math Club that created the event, said she suggested the club hold the Pi Day event as a fundraiser. She said it was originally planned for next Wednesday; however, since that date is during spring break, the club decided to hold the event a week earlier.
“We didn’t really know what to expect,” she said.
In addition to pies being thrown in professors’ faces, there was a hot dog toss, pie walk and tire race. The event was held in front of Harter Union in the early afternoon. Pies were $3.
Kevin McCarthy, professor of business and economics, said he attended the celebration and played some of the games.
“It was fun,” he said. “I played a game like musical chairs with mathematics.”
McCarthy said he was supposed to have pies thrown at his face but decided against it once he got there.
“I saw Dr. (Kelly) Bach, (assistant professor of mathematics), being pied, and I thought that it didn’t look fun.” Eric Hays, academic support coordinator, was also involved in the celebration.
“I was glad to do it,” he said. “I was hoping there’d be a few more people, and it was colder than I expected, but I would definitely do it again next year.”
Overall, there weren’t as many people as the group anticipated, but Hays said there was a good turnout.
“During breaks, more people came,” Hays said. “College students just don’t have much money to spare.”
McCarthy said he thought if it had been better promoted, more people would have shown up.
“I think they should have an auction next year,” he said. “It would raise a little more money.”
