In an effort to arm community members with information about effects of the proposed intermodal rail yard in Gardner, three environmental organizations joined to promote a local coalition opposed to the developing of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway project during a meeting Wednesday night.
Self-described citizen activist and Hillsdale Environmental Loss Prevention member Lisa Meisinger said a representation of people fighting for an Environmental Impact Statement is the next step in shifting the railway’s plans.
“We have exhausted other routes and the final one is the most expensive – court,” Meisinger said. “We’re just a grassroots volunteer program and we need people to join the effort.”
After receiving a broad overview of the environmental impact of the project, community members who expressed concern about the aesthetics of the area as well as the devaluation of real estate value were urged to actively participate.
