The Student Activities Council shook things up with the 2010 Homecoming festivities, planning to improve events and working to include more students.
Valerie Foos, SAC special events coordinator, has been working with junior John Babb, as well as Student Activities Coordinator Jon Bell and Kayla Smith, area coordinator for residence life, as well as resident assistants, to encourage more students to join the Independent team which is made up of students not involved in greek organizations.
“We’ve been trying to get them more involved in making them more aware that Homecoming week is coming up and … they should really get involved,” Foos said.
Foos said the setup is similar to past years, but the events themselves are different. Some of the activities during BU Olympics, which was Tuesday in Collins Center, were different and the Knowledge Bowl event Wednesday, in the Allen Dining Hall, was re-done. Instead of having a spirit event, SAC helped to plan a PowderPuff football game at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
“Well, last year we got a lot of negative feedback regarding Knowledge Bowl, so this year we did a complete revamp, but it’s going to be a lot more interactive,” Hannah Schaake, SAC impact coordinator, said. “It’s not just going to be trivia, there’s going to be a lot of different games and surprise twists. It’s exciting.”
For greek members, an important part of Homecoming week is Serenades, which was Monday.
“We look forward to it … and hanging out with our sisters and getting to hang out with the boys when they come through,” Panhellenic Council President Rachel Walkowiak said. “It’s kind of a bonding event. Like I said, it’s tradition and the songs get passed down through the different classes, so the songs that we sing is a song for several years … It’s always a fun, lighthearted time.”
Foos hopes for many students to go and support the Homecoming events.
“It’s going to be entertaining,” Foos said.
The winners of Homecoming week will be announced at the halftime of the Baker football game against Graceland Univesity, which starts at 2 p.m. Saturday at Liston Stadium.
