The Baker men’s soccer team defeated Southern Nazarene University 2-1 Friday and Oklahoma Christian University 4-1 Saturday in Oklahoma City.

The game against Southern Nazarene started off slow until junior Tom Lowndes put one in the net after 60 minutes of play.

Shortly after, Southern Nazarene tied the match, but the Wildcats were able to come back when sophomore Nick Aguilar scored with about five minutes remaining in the game.

“Everyone was willing to battle to the last minute,” Lowndes said.

Lowndes had a goal, as well as an assist to Aguilar, who scored off of Lowndes’ corner kick.

The Wildcats outshot Oklahoma Christian 9-1 during the first half of play on Saturday; however the Eagles were winning 1-0 at the beginning of the second half.

Baker started to push the pace after halftime and after making a break, hit the post twice.

Junior Steven Stewart quickly scored the first goal to tie the game 1-1 and senior Jacob Chiarelli scored the following goal shortly after to put the Wildcats on top.

“Our confidence went up and theirs went down, and we were able to do some nice things,” head coach Nate Houser said.

The third goal was scored by Lowndes, who also had an assist, and sophomore Odaine Sinclair scored the last goal, making the score 4-1.

“Odaine Sinclair had two guys on his back all day and continued to do well,” Houser said.

Sinclair was pulled from the game with only a few minutes left after receiving a red card.

With the red card, Sinclair will be forced to sit out the Wildcats’ next match against Rockhurst University.

Houser said the team played well together and it was a very good start to the season.

“It was fun as a player to see everything working and to be a part of that,” junior Nick Ebmeyer said. “The key will be to play like that every game.”

Houser also added that goalkeeper Michael Sheridan played well, along with freshman Ben Coyle and junior Tony Weber.

“The team showed in glimpses what we can do and how good we can be this season,” Lowndes said.

The Wildcats play NCAA Division II team Rockhurst University Friday in Kansas City, Mo., and Hastings College Monday at North Park in Baldwin City.
