Four sets of brightly colored T-shirts are a sign the women’s recruitment is wrapping up today. However, the men have one week remaining.
The women’s formal recruitment began Monday and will conclude today.
Professor of Biology Darcy Russell, who’s serving as the Panhellenic adviser, said the sororities encourage women to join by promoting greek life, not specific sororities. One woman from each sorority disaffiliates from her organization during the recruitment process to act as a guidance counselor known as a Gamma Chi.
Junior Brantley Bennett, one of four Gamma Chis, said she and the others tried to make recruitment an enjoyable experience.
“Our goal is to maximize recruitment,” she said. “It allows (potential members) to view what greek life is before heading straight into something that they don’t know and they might want to try.”
As of Wednesday 86 women were taking part in the recruitment process.
Russell said sororities accept new members based on a quota system.
“Quota is a restriction for the house so that every chapter has the chance to have new members,” she said.
As of Wednesday, Russell said the quota for the sororities will be between 16 and 21 new members.
Senior Nate Michel, interfraternity council member and vice president of recruitment, said the fraternities do not have a quota system, which makes recruitment more competitive, especially when fewer people are interested in participating. This year members of IFC decided to extend recruitment to a 10-day process after recruitment numbers were below expectations in 2006.
“We needed to be more united as a group of all the fraternities. We need to have more events all together and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
A gym night kicked off the fraternity events Wednesday. Events continue today with fraternity members and prospective members attending a Royals game. A luau will take place from 6-8 p.m. Saturday on the south lawn of Baker.
Michel said formal recruitment will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday beginning in Harter Union. The men will receive their bids Thursday and can accept them next Friday.
