Baker University students interested in saving the planet can turn to an organization on campus that is equally environmentally minded.

Earth We Are is a campus organization that protects nature, raises awareness about environmental issues and gives students more of a chance to get involved. Some of the activities the organization sponsors are highway cleanups, an annual duck race and a recycling program.

EWA vice president Sarah Romereim said she enjoys the projects the group takes on.

“This provides an opportunity for students to have more outdoor activities and gives them a chance to help out the environment,” she said.

In addition to community service work, EWA also participates in fund-raisers to support such environmental causes as research in Ecuador and Peru, the purchase of acres in the rainforest and Operation Wildlife, a wildlife rescue project.

EWA faculty sponsor Roger Boyd said he thinks the club plays an important role on campus.

“I think the environment is extremely important for people to be aware of. (EWA is important) for students concerns to be met … and the opportunity for students and the environment to get together,” he said.

The organization helps students learn to help protect the environment, invites them to open their minds and start making a stand, Boyd said. An environmental issue EWA is highly concerned with is recycling.

“Our most important activity is to increase the recycling program, to promote proper ways to recycle, like what can they recycle and where it is they can recycle. It’s very educational,” he said.
