Auditions for Alpha Psi Omega’s annual production took place Monday and Tuesday.
The theater honor society will be performing “Mr. Marmalade,” a contemporary play, written by Noah Haidle.
Senior Justin Whittaker is in his second year as the president of Alpha Psi Omega and has been involved in the honor society since the end of his freshman year. His responsibilities include conducting meetings, planning events and communicating with the national chapter.
The process by which the members choose the play they will perform is very democratic.
“Everyone brings in different plays and we vote on which one would be fun to do and which one works best for everyone,” Whittaker said. “This play has been in the running to be chosen for four years and has never been chosen. This is its time.”
Whittaker said junior Philip Schiffelbein has been chosen to direct “Mr. Marmalade,” which opens April 29.
Schiffelbein is the vice president of Alpha Psi Omega. This will be his first time directing a play.
Schiffelbein said everyone who wanted to direct the play had to present their vision for the show and then the other members of the honor society voted. All Alpha Psi Omega members have to have completed the directing course in order to be selected as director.
Besides being in charge of casting for the show, he is also involved in areas such as set and costume design.
“I want to provide a cohesive vision,” Schiffelbein said. “To drive the designers and cast to create one big story for the audience.”
Auditions were open to the entire campus and Schiffelbein said he was looking to choose seven roles, four men and three women. He said some cast members will be playing multiple roles.
Schiffelbein suggested the group perform this production and felt really drawn to the piece. He said the play deals with life transitions everyone has to deal with.
“(‘Mr. Marmalade’) is really my style,” Schiffelbein said. “It is a dark comedy.”
Junior Ali Watson is the costume designer, and also will be auditioning for a role in the production.
Watson said she has never seen a production of the play and the show’s costumes are not too outrageous.
“I always liked the opportunity to be in an (Alpha Psi Omega) show,” Watson said. “They are usually more edgy than main stage shows.”
