Playing in the final home game of their collegiate careers, the Wildcats’ seniors stepped up scoring five of the team’s six goals in a shutout win against Missouri Valley College on senior night Wednesday at Liston Stadium.
The 6 – 0 victory keeps the hope of a postseason run alive and returns the team to the .500 mark.
Head coach Alan Koch said he was extremely pleased with his seniors.
“They were absolutely fantastic,” Koch said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the seniors.”
Koch also said his seniors represented Baker University in the only way they could – by playing hard.
“They played with a great deal of Baker passion and Baker pride. It was awesome,” Koch said.
The constant drizzle and cold weather didn’t bother the ‘Cats as they controlled the ball for most of the game and continued to capitalize on chances to score.
Baker found the net early and continued to score in bunches. In the 12th minute of play, the Wildcats found the net twice. Junior forward Gerard Grehan scored first, and senior forward Marty Johnston scored the second goal when Baker was awarded a penalty kick.
Just before halftime, Grehan and Johnston hooked up for the third goal of the game.
Almost immediately after the whistle blew for the second half to begin, senior forward Josh Marchbank scored for the ‘Cats. In the 61st minute he netted his second goal of the game.
The final goal of the game, putting a win way out of the Vikings’ reach, came from Johnston.
Senior defender Scott Appell said his final home game couldn’t have been any better.
“It feels great to win 6 – 0 in your final home game at night on the turf with all our fans out there,” Appell said.
Appell said his team finally put together a complete game.
“We finally came out and put together a 90-minute game,” Appell said. “After the up and down season we’ve had, it’s nice to have one of these games.”
Senior goalkeeper Bret Clark echoed the sentiments of his teammate.
“It was nice to win the way we did against a really good team,” Clark said. “I think (this game) showed our potential the entire year.”
The ‘Cats will take on Graceland University Saturday in Lamoni, Iowa.
