With the regular season coming to a close, senior softball players Kelsey Epperson and Chelsi Taylor finished their last regular season doubleheader splitting with Central Methodist University.

In the first game, the Wildcats won 5-3, securing the eighth seed in the HAAC Tournament. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Wildcats fell short 6-0.

“In game one, we came out and hit really well. Katie Worley came out and just hit the cover off the ball to the hay. She was seven for seven, she hit a double, a home run, she hit two singles, and just on fire,” head coach Matt Windle said. “And then (freshman) Heather (Gruber) throwing like, you know, she always does. She throws and keeps us in games. And then, throw in the fact that her blood sugar is way up and I don’t know about it and she comes out and almost passes out. She’s gutty.”

Senior Chelsi Taylor said it feels great to go to the playoffs.

“After the last pitch I got tears because I was so excited,” Taylor said.

Epperson and Taylor, along with the team, will play in the playoffs for the first time in their Baker careers.

“We sat down at the beginning of the year and said our big goal was to make the conference tournament,” Windle said. “Anything beyond that was just icing on the cake.”

“We’re a very tough team, I think people over look us. On the field, we work pretty hard,” Taylor said. “We can usually make up for each other. We’re pretty good about picking each other up. Off the field, we’re a pretty close team. We’ve really gotten to know everyone. It’s really easy to say they’re my second family.”
