Last weekend artists had the opportunity to display their artwork in locations all over Lawrence.
The 12th annual Lawrence ArtWalk, held Friday through Sunday, featured art at 32 locations. Works from about 40 artists included paintings, sculptures, jewelry and woodworking.
The ArtWalk gave an opportunity for local artist Bill Bowerman to not only showcase his artwork, but also to talk with the people who came to enjoy the art.
“There’s an awful lot of very wonderful art that you can see in just a few places,” Bowerman said. “You can talk to the artist, which is something you rarely get the chance to do. It’s like being invited into other people’s living rooms and studios.”
One medium of art he showed was scanography. Near the time of the birth of his grandson, Bowerman said he found a gingko leaf that inspired him to capture an image of the leaf and the feelings surrounding the life event. Bowerman used a flatbed scanner. By taking the lid off the scanner in a dark room, one can scan and create an image with a high resolution.
“Scanography has opened many new artistic directions for me,” Bowerman wrote in his profile on the Web site for Fields Gallery in Lawrence. “It is a fruitful arena for invention, for discovery and for the experience and sharing of enjoyment, wonder, surprise, curiosity and beauty.”
Bowerman also got to see the photography of other artists at the ArtWalk, like photographer Paul Herpich. Herpich presented an array of works produced with mostly traditional film and digital printing.
Through his hobby, Herpich said he hopes to help people take time to notice their surroundings, as photography has helped him to do.
“I hope they stop and smell the roses,” Herpich said. “I definitely pay more attention now. I’m not just in a rush to where I am going.”
ArtWalk director John Wysocki said the event has increased in popularity for both artists and patrons.
“Since it has gone on for 12 years now, it has become quite a well-known event,” Wysocki said. “If you missed it this time, come out next year.”
