It started with a couple students throwing a Frisbee on campus, and it has led to the throwing of a Frisbee tournament.
The Baker University Ultimate Frisbee organization will host a competition Sunday at Liston Stadium. Teams from both the University of Kansas and Kansas State University will be involved.
Junior Eric Riggs believes the Baker team will be able to match up nicely against the larger schools.
“We know that some of them have pretty organized club teams, and we’re excited to play them,” Riggs said. “I think we have some really good talent. We have a lot of regulars. We play with some decent defensive strategy.”
Senior Sarah Jones said the team has proven in previous years that the size of the school playing doesn’t always matter.
“We went to a tournament last October and got second place,” she said. “We have some really awesome players. I’m confident we can take this tournament by storm.”
Freshman Andrew Matz said Baker’s team is full of competitive players; he’s also looking forward to taking the field.
“We have a lot of good athletes with a lot of competitive backgrounds,” he said. “I’m always looking forward to a good competition.”
Riggs said playing ultimate Frisbee at Liston Stadium has been a definite improvement from the grass field next to Mabee Hall.
“You can run full gun out there and not worry about falling in a hole,” he said.
Jones said using Liston for practice and games is always fun, plus it provides a competitive advantage come tournament time.
“It’s a lot of fun playing on the turf,” she said. “It’s a lot easier for running around. It’s a lot bigger than most ultimate fields, so we are probably in better shape than most teams.”
Matz said having a turf field to play on is something most other schools do not provide.
“I think it’s something unique that none of our tournaments have,” Matz said. “It’s a lot faster than grass, is how I would describe it.”
The tournament is sponsored by Flashlight, a company that produces LED Frisbees. The company is sending a sponsorship promotional packet, giving away free Frisbees and a raffle will be held.
Riggs said he is excited about the sponsorship.
“I’m really glad they’ve taken interest in us and are willing to help out with our tournament,” he said.
Riggs believes the tournament will increase awareness about BUUF.
“We’ve never put one on yet,” he said. “It’s just letting people know that we are here.”
