Though the name Fellowship of Christian Athletes might imply members are only those with athletic skill, not everyone must know how to catch, throw, tackle, serve or shoot to be involved.
Senior Evan Wright is the president of FCA for the second consecutive year, and said he welcomes anyone wanting to join the organization.
“There’s no membership sign up – it’s open to all,” Wright said. “I would guess that we’re split about half and half between athletes and non-athletes.”
Director of Student Health Services Ruth Sarna has been staff adviser of FCA for 11 years and said meetings consist of worship time, discussion and often music and games.
“We have prayer … Evan plays the guitar, sometimes they watch videos, sometimes there’s a student-led topic,” Sarna said. “It’s a good place for students to find support from each other.”
Freshman David Cooper was involved with his high school’s FCA chapter for three years and acted as a worship leader. He found the support from Baker University FCA members helped ease the transition of moving away from home in Texas.
“I already knew some of the people (in FCA),” he said. “It was a great place just to come and meet new people.”
Wright said FCA may collaborate on future projects with the potential evangelists’ club.
“(From what I’ve heard,) there would probably be some discussions on denominational issues, which is also one of our goals,” Wright said. “We’d like to work on bringing cross-denominational unity in the religion department.”
FCA meets at 7 p.m. Wednesdays in the Harter Union lobby.
