While many students traveled home over fall break, the Baker volleyball team hit the road for the second weekend in a row and headed to Liberty, Mo., where they swept the competition.
The Wildcats took only three games Saturday evening to put away Kansas Wesleyan University. With the first two being close (25-23, 26-24) the Wildcats finished the match 25-15.
Only a few hours before, the Wildcats handled William Woods University in four games. Allen recorded 29 digs for the match, while sophomore Brooke Pryor and senior Alexis Pryor combined for 27 kills.
Following the weekend tournament, senior Jayde Allen was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference Libero of the Week Monday.
Sophomore Christina Delladio said the team came together over the weekend after a not-so-great finish the weekend before.
“We finally pulled it together and played as a team,” she said. “We weren’t so worried about our individual selves as much as we were about the team.”
Friday’s matchup against conference rival William Jewell College came down to the fifth game of the match. After losing the fourth game of the match, the Wildcats came back to beat the Cardinals 15-10 in the fifth.
The Wildcats defensive line recorded a total 109 digs to Jewell’s 86. The Pryor sisters, along with Delladio and freshman Rachael Solis, led the team with a combined 63 kills for the match.
Solis said the team went into the weekend with the mindset it would beat William Jewell.
“We worked really hard that week,” she said. “We were really set on beating them. We went off that and set the pace for the weekend and ended up going on a streak.”
The weekend before didn’t go as well for the Wildcats, as they came home empty-handed and went 0-3.
The Wildcats traveled Oct. 9 to Lindenwood University, where the team dropped the match 1-3. After a rough start (25-17) the Wildcats played the Lions close into the fourth game where they lost 26-24.
“We played pretty good against Lindenwood,” Delladio said. “We didn’t have anything to lose. They are ranked nationally; it was basically go big or go home.”
The stop in St. Charles, Mo., wasn’t the only one for the Wildcats that weekend. After a match at Lindenwood, the team hit the road and traveled on to Hannibal, Mo., where they took on Hannibal-LaGrange College. The Wildcats were unable to pull through and lost the match in three games.
“We were all really sick of being in vans,” Delladio said. “I think that played a factor in it.”
Continuing on the Wildcats’ long weekend, Oct. 11 the team kept trucking on over to Canton, Mo., where it played another conference rival, Culver-Stockton College. The Wildcats brought the match into the fifth game but were unable to pull out a victory.
The Wildcats matched up Thursday at home against Graceland University. Results were unavailable at presstime.
